In many homes, coffee is more than just a morning drinkโ€”itโ€™s a cherished ritual. Imagine starting your day without that warm, comforting cup. For many, coffee is essential, especially after lunch, when it helps beat the post-meal slump that can make the afternoon drag.

However, coffeeโ€™s natural acidity can sometimes irritate the stomach. What if there was a simple, natural trick to soften this acidity and enhance the experience? Experts suggest adding eggshells to your coffeeโ€”a surprising but beneficial combo you might want to try.

How eggshells neutralize coffee acidity

The secret lies in the composition of eggshells. Theyโ€™re made up of around 95% calcium carbonate, a mineral known for its ability to act as a natural antacid. When you add crushed eggshells to your coffee, you neutralize part of the drinkโ€™s inherent acidity. This simple addition transforms your coffee into a smoother, less bitter beverage that many find more pleasant to sip, especially if they have a sensitive stomach.

To prepare, rinse the shells thoroughly, let them dry, and then crush them into a fine powder using a mortar, blender, or food processor. You can place this powder directly in your coffee filter before brewing or sprinkle it into your cup. This easy and affordable method doesnโ€™t alter your coffeeโ€™s aroma or flavor but makes your cup gentler to your digestion.

Eggshells and coffee grounds as natural plant fertilizer

But the benefits donโ€™t stop at your morning cup. This eggshell and coffee combination also shines as an organic fertilizer for your garden. Eggshells are packed with calcium and other minerals that nourish the soil and encourage healthy plant growth.

When mixed with used coffee grounds, the blend creates a nutrient-rich compost enhancing soil texture. This mixture not only helps seeds germinate faster but also wards off garden pests like slugs and snails. To use it, crush the eggshells, mix them with coffee grounds and other organic scraps such as fruit peels or dead leaves, then spread the mixture around your plants. This natural fertilizer supports sustainable gardening practices and helps reduce waste.

Other practical uses and eco benefits of eggshells

Eggshells donโ€™t just belong in your coffee or garden. The thin membrane inside the shell boasts antimicrobial and healing properties, making it useful for treating minor cuts and scrapes at home. In the kitchen, a small amount of powdered eggshell (no more than half a teaspoon daily) can be added to dishes to give an extra boost of natural calcium.

Using eggshells in your daily routine is also a brilliant way to embrace a zero-waste lifestyle. Instead of tossing eggshells without a second thought, you turn a typical kitchen waste product into valuable resources, whether for your coffee, your plants, or even your health.

On a personal note, trying this eggshell coffee trick reminded me how small changes in daily habits can unlock unexpected benefits. Itโ€™s not just about avoiding wasteโ€”itโ€™s about rediscovering practical solutions hidden in everyday life.

  1. There is a risk of Salmonella here. It is vital that the shells are boiled for 20 minutes. Boil three eggs, once a week, then to be safe, boil just the shells for another 15 minutes.
This will provide all the calcium one adult needs for the week, but note that mortar & pestle powdering is time consuming. The crumbs can be softened in vinegar for adding to cooked food. But if the meal is
Magnesium rich then the Calcium benefit is Zero…..
    Take care of yourself, Maurice….
