Imagine opening your fridge and suddenly questioning whether the eggs inside could make you sick. Thatโs the reality for thousands of families this week after a massive FDA egg recall rocked the shelves of major supermarkets across the country. With over 20 million eggs recalled and dozens sickened in a growing multistate Salmonella outbreak, youโre probably wondering: Are my eggs safe?
On June 6, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that August Egg Company of Hilmar, California, is recalling more than 1.7 million dozen eggsโthatโs over 20 million eggsโafter a joint investigation with the CDC revealed links to a Salmonella outbreak. At least 79 people across seven states have fallen ill, with 21 hospitalized so far. Itโs a wake-up call for anyone who thinks food recalls are just headlines, not personal.
Which eggs are affected? Full list and how to check your carton
The recall affects both brown cage-free eggs and brown certified organic eggs produced by August Egg Company but sold under different brand names. Brands impacted include Clover, First Street, Nulaid, O Organics, Marketside, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sun Harvest, and Sunnyside. These eggs were distributed in packs of 6, 12, 18, and in larger boxes to restaurants and retailers.
If you shopped at Walmart, Save Mart, Safeway, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Food 4 Less, Ralphs, or Raleyโs between February and May 2025 in states like Arizona, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Washington, and Wyoming, you should check your fridge immediately. Affected eggs have โsell byโ dates between March 4 and June 19, 2025.
Look for the plant codes โP-6562โ or โCA-5330โ and Julian dates between โ32โ and โ126โ printed on the side of your egg carton. If you see those numbers, your eggs are part of the recall.

What to do if you have the recalled eggs in your home
So, what should you do if you find any of the recalled cage-free or organic brown eggs in your fridge? The FDA says you should not eat themโthrow them away immediately or return them to where you bought them for a full refund. If you canโt tell whether your eggs are part of the recall (for example, if youโve removed them from their original carton), the safest move is to toss them out.
After discarding, be sure to wash your hands and clean any surfaces that may have touched the eggs. Salmonella can linger on counters, plates, and even your refrigerator shelf.
What are the symptoms of Salmonellaโand when should you call a doctor?
As someone who once ate a recalled product without realizing it (spoiler: I got very sick), I know firsthand how overwhelming these warnings can feel. Salmonella infection usually strikes between 6 hours and 6 days after eating contaminated food. Watch out for diarrhea, vomiting, fever above 102ยฐF, stomach cramps, or dehydration. Most people recover in about a week, but children, seniors, and anyone with a weakened immune system can develop serious complications.
If you or someone in your household starts showing symptoms after eating eggs, donโt waitโcontact your healthcare provider right away. If you have additional questions about this recall, the August Egg Company can be reached at 1-800-710-2554, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT.
This outbreak is still under investigation, and more brands or states could be added to the recall list. If you spot these eggs in your kitchen, act fast and stay safe.
